It arrives in slightly different forms, but the shape is always the same:

"I've done therapy for years — and this reached something the talking never touched."

It would be easy — and good for business — to leave that quote there and let you draw the obvious conclusion. We're not going to, because the obvious conclusion is wrong.

Breathwork is not a replacement for therapy. Therapy is not a substitute for breathwork. They do different jobs — and the people who get the most from either tend to understand the difference.

What therapy does brilliantly

Therapy works with the story. A good therapist helps you understand where a pattern came from, see it clearly, name it, and build new ways of responding. It's structured, relational, and cumulative — and for many conditions it's the properly evidenced, first-line treatment. If you're dealing with a diagnosed mental health condition, ongoing trauma, or anything that feels unsafe, a qualified therapist or your GP is where to start. Not a breathwork session. We'll say that as many times as it needs saying.

Therapy also gives you something no group session can: a consistent, confidential relationship with someone whose entire job is your mind. That matters, and nothing on this page argues otherwise.

Where people get stuck

And yet — that sentence keeps arriving at our sessions. Usually from people who genuinely valued their therapy. So what's going on?

Here's the pattern they describe. They understand their story completely. They can explain their childhood, name their triggers, narrate their patterns with real insight. The understanding is all there.

And the weight is still there too.

Insight lives in the mind. But tension, stress and old emotion also live in the body — in the shoulders that never drop, the jaw that never unclenches, the system that never fully switches off. You can't always think your way into a body that's been braced for years.

That's the gap. Not a failure of therapy — a limit of what talking, on its own, is built to reach.

What breathwork does differently

Breathwork skips the story and goes to the body. In a 9D session you lie down, headphones on, and sustained connected breathing — combined with layered sound and guided voice — shifts the state of your nervous system directly. Not by discussing the tension. By giving it, as we put it in our sessions, somewhere to go.

What tends to move in a session isn't understanding — most people arrive with plenty of that. What moves is the held stuff underneath the understanding: the stress that sits in the shoulders, the emotion that got parked years ago, the brace the body forgot it was holding. Sometimes that release is loud, sometimes it's completely quiet. Either way, people consistently describe the same after-state: lighter, clearer, properly calm — often for the first time in a long while.

One session doesn't rewrite a life. But it can shift what years of analysis couldn't — precisely because it isn't analysis.

So which one do you need?

The honest answer: it depends what kind of stuck you are.

Therapy first if you're dealing with a diagnosed condition, active crisis, unprocessed trauma that feels overwhelming, or you simply don't yet understand what's happening to you. The story needs a skilled witness before the body needs a release.

Breathwork fits when you understand plenty and still feel heavy; when stress lives in your body more than your thoughts; when you're functional but running on empty; when you want to feel different, not just understand differently.

And often — genuinely — both. Plenty of our regulars are in therapy and use breathwork alongside it: the talking does the understanding, the breath does the releasing, and each makes the other work better. More than one has told us their therapy sessions went deeper after the body finally let go of what it was holding. Some therapists now recommend somatic practices alongside their work for exactly this reason.

If you're currently in therapy and thinking about breathwork, mention it to your therapist. That's not a formality — it's the both-tools-one-toolbox approach working the way it should.

The honest summary

"Breathwork vs therapy" is the wrong frame. It's understanding vs release — mind-work vs body-work — and most people carrying real weight eventually need some of each.

If you've done the understanding and the weight is still there, that's not a sign you failed at therapy. It's a sign the remaining work might not be a talking job. And if you've never done either: start wherever feels safest, and know that both doors stay open.

If the body's turn has come

The gentlest way to find out what breathwork reaches is to experience one session. So here it is: for most people, yes — breathwork is safe, and you stay in control the whole way through. And for some people, it needs a conversation first. This post covers both, plainly.

What actually happens in your body

Connected breathing — the style used in 9D Breathwork — means breathing fuller and faster than normal, without pauses, for a sustained period. That changes the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood. Your body notices.

Common sensations during a session include tingling in the hands, feet or face, light-headedness, temperature changes, waves of emotion, and sometimes tightness or cramping in the hands (this has a name — tetany — and it passes when you soften the breath). Some people laugh. Some people cry. Some people feel very little the first time, then a lot the second.

None of this is the body going wrong. It's the body doing exactly what sustained breathing does — and it settles when you slow down. Which brings us to the most important thing on this page.

You are in control the entire time

This is the part people don't realise before their first session. Breathwork is not something that happens to you. You are the one breathing. Which means you hold the dial.

Breathe fully and the experience deepens. Soften the breath and it eases. Return to normal breathing and, within a couple of minutes, you're back.

At every session we run, this is explained clearly before we begin — how the method works, what you might feel, and how to adjust the intensity at any point. Nobody is pushed. Ever.

That's also why the setting matters. You're lying down for the entire journey — you're not standing, driving, or in water, which is where unguided breathwork can genuinely become dangerous. (For the same reason: never practise strong breathwork techniques in a pool, bath, or while driving. Ever.)

Who should check with us — or their doctor — first

Deep breathing practices place a temporary, healthy demand on the body — a bit like exercise does. And like exercise, there are conditions where you should get advice before taking part. Please message us before booking if any of these apply:

· Pregnancy
· Cardiovascular conditions, including previous heart attack or uncontrolled high blood pressure
· Epilepsy or a history of seizures
· Severe asthma or serious respiratory conditions
· Glaucoma or detached retina
· Recent surgery or serious physical injury
· A diagnosis of bipolar disorder, psychosis, or schizophrenia
· Severe mental health instability right now — including recent hospitalisation

This isn't a "computer says no" list. In some cases a session can be adapted; in others, a gentler practice or one-to-one setting is the right starting point; and sometimes the honest answer is "not right now." We'd far rather have a five-minute conversation before you book than have you sit in a session that isn't right for you. There's no charge for asking, and no awkwardness — it's the most normal message we receive.

If you're managing any medical condition, your GP knows your situation better than any breathwork page ever will. Checking in with them first is never the wrong move.

"But I saw someone crying / shaking / shouting in a video..."

Yes — release can look dramatic. Emotion that has been held in the body for years sometimes moves loudly on its way out. What a video can't show you is the room around it: a trained facilitator nearby, a person who remains in control of their own breath, and a group that has been prepared for exactly this.

Big releases are not a sign that something has gone wrong. But they're also not compulsory. Plenty of people have quiet, deeply settling sessions and get just as much from them. There is no prize for the loudest journey. Your body decides what's ready to move — the session simply gives it the invitation.

What a well-run session includes

If you're considering breathwork anywhere — with us or anyone else — this is what safe facilitation looks like:

✓ A clear introduction before any breathing starts
✓ An intake form so the facilitator knows about health conditions in advance
✓ Explicit teaching on how to adjust or stop your own breath
✓ Lying-down practice only
✓ Facilitators present and attentive throughout — not off in a corner
✓ Time at the end to ground and land before anyone drives home
✓ No pressure at any point

Every Torus Tree session includes all of the above. Wellbeing

Breathwork for Burnout — Can It Actually Help?

By Mark Scott19 June 20269 min read

Burnout doesn't announce itself. It creeps in slowly. First you're tired. Then you're tired all the time. Then even the things you used to enjoy start to feel like effort. You keep pushing — because stopping feels worse — until one day the tank is simply empty. If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. Burnout is one of the most common things we see at Torus Tree. And it's one of the things 9D Breathwork addresses most effectively. Here's why.

What Burnout Actually Is

Burnout isn't laziness. It isn't weakness. It's a physiological state — the result of a nervous system that has been running on stress hormones for too long without adequate recovery.

When we're under sustained pressure, the body stays in a state of low-level threat response. Cortisol and adrenaline remain elevated. The parasympathetic nervous system — responsible for rest, digestion and repair — barely gets a look in.

Over time, this depletes everything. Energy. Motivation. Emotional resilience. Cognitive clarity. The ability to feel joy. The capacity to be fully present with the people you love.

The reason burnout is so hard to shift through rest alone is that the nervous system has become stuck in a survival pattern. You can lie on a sofa for a week and still feel wired, flat or disconnected — because the body hasn't actually switched off. The threat response is still running in the background, burning through your reserves even when you're doing nothing.

Signs you might be experiencing burnout

Persistent exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix

Feeling detached, flat or emotionally numb

Dreading work or things you used to enjoy

Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

Physical symptoms — headaches, tight chest, shallow breathing

Feeling like you're constantly running but getting nowhere

Irritability, cynicism or a creeping sense of meaninglessness

Why Thinking Your Way Out Doesn't Work

Most people try to manage burnout through the mind — planning better, setting firmer boundaries, taking time off, talking it through in therapy, reading about stress management.

These things matter. But they don't reach the root.

Burnout is stored in the body. In the breath patterns that have become shallow and guarded. In the muscle tension that's been there so long you've stopped noticing it. In the suppressed emotions that never got processed because there was always something else to deal with — another deadline, another demand, another reason to hold it together.

The mind can understand burnout perfectly and still be unable to shift it — because understanding isn't the same as releasing. To genuinely recover, you need to work at the level where the burnout actually lives.

How Breathwork Helps With Burnout

9D Breathwork creates the physiological conditions for deep recovery — not by forcing relaxation, but by giving the nervous system what it needs to shift out of survival mode on its own terms.

During a session, guided conscious breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system directly. This is the branch of the autonomic nervous system responsible for rest, repair and recovery — the exact state that burnout suppresses.

Heart rate slows. Cortisol drops. The breath pattern shifts from the shallow, chest-led breathing of stress to the deeper, slower breathing of safety. And as the body begins to feel genuinely safe — often for the first time in months — things that have been held start to move.

What Happens in the Body

The 9D Breathwork process layers nine distinct elements — conscious breathing, binaural beats, somatic frequencies, guided voice, music and more — all designed to work together to move the nervous system through a complete cycle of activation and release.

For people carrying burnout, what often happens in a session is significant. Emotions that have been suppressed for months — sometimes years — begin to surface and move through the body. Physical tension releases. Tears come, often suddenly and surprisingly. And then, underneath all of it, a deep stillness becomes available that feels quite different from ordinary tiredness.

Not the flatness of depletion. The quiet of someone who has actually put something down.

The Science Behind It

Conscious connected breathing — the core technique in 9D Breathwork — has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, activate the vagus nerve and shift brainwave states from beta (active, analytical thinking) into alpha and theta (deep relaxation and emotional processing).

In the theta state, the brain becomes receptive in ways it simply isn't during ordinary waking consciousness. Emotional memories surface more readily. The body's natural healing processes accelerate. And the kind of deep rest that burnout makes impossible becomes genuinely available.

I came in completely empty. I left feeling like I'd had three weeks of sleep in an hour. I don't know how else to describe it.
Perth Session Attendee

What People With Burnout Experience in a Session

Everyone's experience is different — and that's by design. The session meets you where you are. But here's what we hear most often from people who arrive carrying burnout:

I cried for about twenty minutes and then felt completely calm. I hadn't cried in two years — I think I needed to.
Dundee Session Attendee

I've been running on adrenaline for so long I forgot what it felt like to actually relax. The session reminded me what my baseline is supposed to feel like.
Stirling Session Attendee

I was sceptical going in. I'm the kind of person who thinks they can manage everything through logic and planning. By the end I was lying there in complete stillness, thinking — why did I wait so long?
Fife Session Attendee

The common thread isn't a particular emotion or a specific experience. It's the sense of something shifting — something that had been stuck, moving. And the particular quality of calm that follows isn't manufactured. It's not the calm of suppression or distraction. It's the calm of genuine release.

Is One Session Enough?

One session can create a meaningful shift — and for some people, that shift is dramatic enough to change how they feel within days. But burnout that has built up over months or years isn't fully resolved in a single afternoon.

Think of it this way: the nervous system learned to operate in survival mode over a long period of time. It takes repeated experiences of genuine safety — of actually completing the stress cycle and returning to rest — to create a new baseline.

How we usually recommend approaching it:

A suggested approach for burnout recovery

Start with a Signature Journey — your first session, at any of our Scottish venues. See how your body responds. Most people know within the first 20 minutes that something is happening.

Return monthly — regular sessions maintain the shift and allow deeper layers to release over time. Many people notice the cumulative effect after their third or fourth session.

Consider a Full Day Immersion — for a more sustained reset, particularly if burnout has been severe or long-standing. A full day creates conditions for a much deeper process than a single session.

Explore the 12 Journeys Programme — for ongoing nervous system support and personal development over six months. Two structured paths — the Reset Path and the Power Path.

Who This Is For

We work with a wide range of people across Scotland — but burnout brings a particular type of person to Torus Tree. Usually someone who has been performing at a high level for a long time. Someone who is externally capable — functioning, managing, holding it together — but internally running on empty.

Business owners. Leaders. Parents who put everyone else first. People who are very good at pushing through and have been doing it for so long they've forgotten what it feels like not to.

You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from this work. You just need to be honest with yourself that the way you're operating isn't sustainable — and that something needs to change at a deeper level than another productivity system or weekend away can reach.

9D Breathwork won't reorganise your diary or solve your workload. But it can give your nervous system the experience of genuine rest — and that changes everything else.

Where to Find Us in Scotland

We run regular sessions across Scotland — Signature Journeys at multiple venues and Full Day Immersions at our home base in Dunkeld, Perthshire. Sometimes it shows up as constant overthinking, a chest that feels tight, a body that won't settle, or a mind that races the moment things go quiet.

Sound familiar?

If so, breathwork might be one of the most effective tools you haven't tried yet.

Why Anxiety Lives in the Body

Most people try to think their way out of anxiety. They journal, they talk it through, they reason with themselves. And sometimes that helps — for a while.

But anxiety isn't just a thought pattern. It's a physiological state. It lives in the nervous system, in the breath, in the tension stored across the body.

That's why talking about it only goes so far. You can understand your anxiety completely and still feel it the moment you stop distracting yourself.

To shift anxiety at the root, you need to work with the body — not just the mind.

What Happens to Your Breath When You're Anxious

When anxiety is present, breathing changes. It becomes shallow, faster, and moves into the chest rather than the belly.

This breathing pattern signals danger to the nervous system — which responds by staying on high alert. It's a loop. Anxiety affects the breath, and the breath reinforces the anxiety.

The good news is that this loop runs in both directions.

Conscious, guided breathing can interrupt the cycle. It sends a direct signal to the nervous system that it's safe to settle — often faster than any thought or conversation can.

What the Research Says

The evidence base for breathwork and anxiety is growing steadily.

Studies have shown that slow, controlled breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the body's rest and recovery state — and reduces the physiological markers of stress including cortisol, heart rate and blood pressure.

Research published in peer-reviewed journals has found that breathwork interventions can significantly reduce self-reported anxiety, with some studies showing effects comparable to established therapeutic approaches.

Neuroscientist Andrew Huberman and trauma specialist Bessel van der Kolk have both highlighted the breath as one of the most direct routes to nervous system regulation available to us.

How 9D Breathwork Works for Anxiety

9D Breathwork combines guided conscious breathing with layered sound, music and voice — delivered through headphones in a small group setting.

The experience typically runs 45 to 60 minutes. You lie down, close your eyes, and follow the breath.

For people carrying anxiety, what often happens is this:

The body — given the right conditions, the right guidance, and enough safety — begins to let go of what it's been holding.

That might look like tears. It might look like physical shaking or tingling. It might look like a deep stillness that feels unfamiliar but welcome.

People frequently describe leaving a session feeling lighter, calmer and more present than they have in months. Not because anything in their life has changed — but because something in their body has shifted.

What People Say

"I've had anxiety for years. One session didn't fix everything — but it gave me a feeling of calm I hadn't felt in a long time. I came back the following month."

"I didn't expect to cry. I didn't expect to feel that much. But I left feeling like I'd put something down that I'd been carrying for years."

"It's the only thing that's ever actually worked on my nervous system rather than just my head."

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rated 5 stars on Google and Facebook

Is Breathwork Safe for Anxiety?

For most people, yes — breathwork is safe and well tolerated.

It's worth noting that intense breathwork can occasionally bring up strong emotions or physical sensations. This is normal and part of the process. Sessions at Torus Tree are fully guided with experienced facilitators who hold a safe and grounded container throughout.

If you have a diagnosed anxiety disorder, are currently in crisis, or have a history of trauma, we'd recommend having a brief conversation with us before booking — we're happy to talk it through.

Ready to Try It?

If anxiety is something you carry — whether it's named or unnamed — a 9D Breathwork session might be exactly what your nervous system needs.

Sessions are available across Scotland including Perth, Dundee, Stirling, Fife and Edinburgh. Full Day Immersions are available at our home venue in Dunkeld, Perthshire.

View upcoming sessions and book your place →

class="article-eyebrow">9D Breathwork · Beginners Guide

By Mark Scott16 April 202611 min read

Breathwork has taken off in recent years — but the term covers everything from gentle box breathing to intense somatic release work. 9D Breathwork is something specific, something layered, and something that consistently produces results that surprise the people who try it. If you've been curious but aren't sure what it actually involves, this guide covers everything you need to know before your first session.

What Is 9D Breathwork?

9D Breathwork is a guided breathwork experience that combines conscious connected breathing with nine distinct layers of sound, frequency and voice — all delivered through headphones while you lie comfortably on a mat.

The "9D" refers to the nine dimensions of the experience — nine elements working simultaneously to create conditions that go significantly deeper than breathwork alone. It was developed specifically to make the benefits of deep breathwork accessible to people who have never done anything like it before, and to create a more consistent, reliable experience than traditional breathwork methods.

You don't need to meditate. You don't need to understand it. You don't need to have done any kind of inner work before. You just need to show up, lie down, put on headphones, and breathe.

The Nine Dimensions — What's Actually in the Headphones

This is what makes 9D Breathwork different from every other breathwork method. While you're breathing, nine distinct elements are working together through the headphones to guide and support the experience.

Dimension 1

Conscious Connected Breathing

The foundation. A specific breathing pattern — continuous, without the usual pause between inhale and exhale — that bypasses the thinking mind and creates real physiological change in the body. This is the engine of the experience.

Dimension 2

Binaural Beats

Two slightly different frequencies delivered separately to each ear, which the brain resolves into a third frequency. This gently shifts brainwave states — moving from beta (ordinary thinking) into alpha and theta (deep relaxation, emotional processing, creativity).

Dimension 3

Solfeggio Frequencies

Ancient sound frequencies embedded in the music — each associated with specific physiological and emotional effects. 528Hz (associated with DNA repair and transformation), 396Hz (releasing fear and guilt), 432Hz (natural tuning that resonates with the body's own rhythms).

Dimension 4

Isochronic Tones

Regular pulses of sound that entrain the brain into specific states. Unlike binaural beats, these work through a single speaker or ear and add another layer of brainwave guidance to deepen the experience.

Dimension 5

Subliminal Affirmations

Positive affirmations embedded below the conscious hearing threshold — present in the soundscape but not consciously audible. In the theta brainwave state that 9D Breathwork creates, the subconscious mind is particularly receptive to new patterns.

Dimension 6

NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming)

Language and communication patterns embedded in the guided voice track that work with the way the brain processes meaning — supporting shifts in belief, perspective and self-perception during the session.

Dimension 7

Somatic Healing

The recognition that the body holds emotional memory — and that the breathing pattern, combined with the sound environment, creates conditions for that stored material to surface and release. This is why people cry, shake, laugh or feel physical sensations during sessions.

Dimension 8

Nature Sounds

Woven throughout the soundscape — rain, wind, forest, ocean. Nature sounds have a direct regulating effect on the nervous system, supporting the shift from threat response into genuine safety and rest.

Dimension 9

Guided Voice

A carefully crafted spoken guide that moves through the session — orienting, supporting, prompting release, and guiding integration. The voice holds the container and gives the experience direction and intention.

All nine of these work simultaneously. That's what makes the experience so different from sitting in silence trying to meditate — and why people consistently report going deeper in a single 9D session than they have in years of other practices.

What Actually Happens in a Session

Here's what to expect from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.

01

Arrive and settle

You're welcomed into the space and given time to settle. There's usually a brief opening circle — a chance to set an intention and feel the energy of the group before the journey begins.

02

Lie down and put on headphones

You lie on a mat — we provide these. Bring a blanket and pillow if you want to feel cosy. Once the headphones are on, the facilitator guides you into the breathing pattern and the journey begins.

03

The breathwork journey

Around 45-60 minutes of guided breathwork. The music, voice and frequencies move through different phases — activation, release, integration. Whatever your body needs to do, it does. You're held throughout.

04

Integration time

After the breathwork ends, you stay lying down in silence. This isn't optional — integration is part of the process. Give the body time to land before you move. Then a gentle close to the session as a group.

Allow around 3 hours in total. The breathwork itself is around an hour, but the opening circle and integration time are not extras — they're part of what makes the experience land properly.

What People Experience During a Session

No two sessions are the same — and no two people experience the same things. What comes up is what your body needs, not what you expect or plan for. But here's what we see most commonly at Torus Tree sessions across Scotland:

Common experiences during a 9D session

Tingling or warmth in the hands, feet or face

Tears — sometimes connected to a specific feeling, sometimes just coming

Laughter — spontaneous, surprising, often following tears

Shaking or trembling as stored tension releases

A dreamlike or visionary state

Deep physical relaxation — a heaviness and stillness in the body

Surfacing of emotions or memories that had been buried

A profound sense of peace or stillness on the other side of release

None of these are wrong. All of them are the body doing exactly what it's supposed to do when it finally feels safe enough to let go.

I didn't know what to expect. I cried for twenty minutes, laughed for ten, and then lay in complete silence feeling like I'd put something down I'd been carrying for years. I booked again before I left.
Perth Session Attendee

What People Feel Afterwards

The session itself is one thing. What follows — in the hours and days after — is where much of the real change happens.

Most people report leaving feeling calmer, lighter and clearer than they have in months. Some feel a deep tiredness — the body integrating significant work. Others feel energised and unusually present. Almost everyone notices that something has shifted, even if they can't immediately articulate what.

What people commonly report after their first session

Better sleep — often dramatically so, even that first night

A clearer head — less mental fog, more capacity to think

Emotional lightness — like something heavy has been put down

More presence — less in the head, more in the body

Reduced anxiety — a quieter nervous system baseline

Increased sensitivity — emotions and sensations feel more available

A sense of reset — not fixed, but genuinely different

I slept like a baby that night. I haven't slept properly in two years. I woke up the next morning and my chest wasn't tight. I didn't know breathing could do that.
Stirling Session Attendee

Who Is 9D Breathwork For?

The sessions at Torus Tree draw a wide range of people — but there are patterns in who arrives and what they're carrying.

A lot of people who come to us look completely fine from the outside. They're functioning, managing, holding it together. But internally they're running on empty — burnt out, anxious, emotionally numb, or carrying grief and stress that has nowhere to go. Business owners. Leaders. Parents. High performers who are very good at pushing through and have been doing it so long they've stopped noticing the cost.

9D Breathwork works particularly well for people who:

Have tried therapy but still feel emotionally blocked

Find meditation difficult or frustrating

Carry stress physically — tight chest, shallow breathing, tension in the body

Feel disconnected from themselves or emotionally flat

Are going through a significant life transition

Want something that works at a deeper level than talking

Are sceptical but curious — the guided structure removes the need to "do it right"

You don't need to understand it before you try it. You don't need to believe in it. You just need to show up and breathe — the rest happens on its own.

Is 9D Breathwork Safe?

Yes — 9D Breathwork is safe for the vast majority of people. Every participant at Torus Tree completes an intake form before their session so we can understand your background and support you appropriately on the day.

There are some contraindications — conditions where we'd want to have a conversation before you book. These include cardiovascular conditions, epilepsy, severe mental health diagnoses, pregnancy, and a small number of others. Please read our safety guide before booking, and contact us directly if you have any concerns.

The tingling sensation that some people experience in the hands and face during breathwork — known as tetany — is harmless and temporary. It's caused by a shift in blood CO2 levels during the altered breathing pattern, resolves quickly when the breath returns to normal, and has no lasting effect.

How Is 9D Breathwork Different From Other Breathwork?

Holotropic breathwork, Wim Hof, pranayama, rebirthing — there are many forms of breathwork and each has its place. Here's how 9D compares:

9D Breathwork vs other methods

vs Holotropic Breathwork — Holotropic uses hyperventilation and is significantly more intense. 9D is more guided and accessible, with a lower risk of overwhelm for beginners.

vs Wim Hof — Wim Hof focuses on cold exposure and breath retention for physical resilience. 9D focuses on emotional and nervous system release through immersive sound and guided journey.

vs Pranayama — Pranayama is a yoga-based breath practice requiring instruction and practice. 9D is fully guided and requires no prior knowledge or skill.

vs Meditation — Meditation asks you to quieten the mind. 9D gives the mind something to follow — the music, the voice, the breath — making it far more accessible for people who find sitting in silence difficult.

The key difference is the layering. 9D Breathwork doesn't rely on breath alone — it uses nine simultaneous elements to create a depth of experience that most people find significantly more powerful than anything they've tried before.

How Many Sessions Do You Need?

One session creates a real and noticeable shift for most people. But one session is rarely the whole story.

Think of the nervous system like a river that has been running in a particular channel for years. One session begins to change the course — but returning regularly is what carves the new channel deep enough to hold. Most people notice a cumulative effect after their third or fourth session that goes significantly beyond what the first session created.

How we suggest approaching it:

Start with a Signature Journey — your first session, from £40, at any of our Scottish venues

Return monthly — to maintain and deepen the shift over time

Consider a Full Day Immersion — for a more intensive reset, particularly if you're carrying significant burnout or grief

Explore the 12 Journeys Programme — two structured six-week paths for sustained change over six months

Where to Find 9D Breathwork Sessions in Scotland

Torus Tree runs regular guided 9D Breathwork sessions across Scotland — Signature Journeys at multiple venues and Full Day Immersions at our home base in Dunkeld, Perthshire. It’s the only part of the autonomic nervous system you can consciously control. That means, with the right kind of breathing, you can directly influence stress, mood, pain perception, and even immune response — often within minutes.

This isn’t belief. in your head, or emotionally shut down, it’s usually not because you need more insight — it’s because your nervous system is out of balance.

Breath is the gateway that allows us to shift that balance deliberately.

<h2 As the leaves continued to fall and the days grew shorter, we stepped together into the ancient Celtic festival that marks the turning of the wheel — the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the darker half of the year.

Samhain invites us inward.

Our gathering honoured this time with story, fire, movement, breathwork, and ceremony — weaving ancestral wisdom with embodied healing in a deeply grounded and human way.

The Power of Coming Together

The day began around the fire — the oldest gathering space we know.

We opened with gratitude: for the land, for each other, and for the journeys that brought us here.

Throughout the day, we moved gently and naturally through a shared process:

Sacred teachings exploring the “fires” of our lives — our challenges, learnings, and inner strength.

A shamanic drum journey to reconnect with our inner flame.

Intuitive movement to express and release what words couldn't reach.

Storytelling with Fiona Ferguson, who shared Samhain myths and the story of Stone Soup — a reminder of generosity and community.

A gentle breathwork journey, releasing what no longer serves.

Stone Soup shared meal, warming, nourishing, and rooted in togetherness.

Time in silent conversation with the fire, listening rather than speaking.

The Arrow Break — Stepping Through Fear

As the light began to soften, we entered into the Arrow Break — a rite of inner courage.

A wooden arrow is placed to the soft part of the throat, along with a belief or story that has held us back.

With breath, presence, and support — we step forward and break through.

For many, this was the most intimidating moment of the entire day — even more than the firewalk itself.

There was a quiet intensity in the room:

heartbeats felt, breaths steadying, courage rising.

Then — a step, a crack, a release.

The shift was visible.

Something lifted.

“The Arrow Break was the moment I realised the biggest thing I needed to walk through wasn’t the fire — it was my own fear.”

“I didn’t know I could hold that much power in myself. I won’t forget that feeling.”

The fire walk would come later.

But for many, the deepest threshold had already been crossed.

Courage.

Trust.

A knowing.

The act of stepping onto the fire was quiet, intentional, and deeply personal.

Not a spectacle — but a ceremony of self-belief.

Some felt liberation.

Some felt peace.

Like something inside you is holding you back, even when you want to move forward? That something might be limiting beliefs — thoughts, patterns, inherited expectations that no longer serve you. Releasing those beliefs can open up real transformation in your life.

What Are Limiting Beliefs & Where Do They Come From

Limiting beliefs are negative stories or assumptions we hold about ourselves: “I’m not good enough”, “I don’t deserve success”, “Change is too hard”. They feel real, but often they’re built from:

Upbringing and parents: Messages from childhood (“You mustn’t…”, “That’s not for people like us…”) become internalised.

Generational patterns: Beliefs passed down (e.g. about work ethic, fear of failure, what success looks like) from grandparents to parents to you.

Cultural and community expectations: In small towns or rural Scotland (including Perthshire), traditions and expectations — perhaps “stick with what we know”, “don’t aim too high”, “be modest” — can be both grounding and limiting.

Past experiences & trauma: Events when your effort was discouraged, when failure hurt, or when you were judged. These experiences feed the belief system.

Why Releasing Limiting Beliefs Matters

Letting go of beliefs that no longer serve you is more than just “feeling lighter.” Here are some big reasons why the work is worth it:

More emotional freedom and happiness

When you stop carrying old beliefs, anxiety, fear, self-doubt tend to fade. You can feel more at ease, more joyful.

Greater potential for growth & success

Without internal blocks, you may try things you never believed you could. New possibilities, new paths open up.

Better relationships, including with your children

If you hold limiting beliefs, there’s a strong chance you’ll transmit them to your kids. Releasing them means breaking cycles — giving your children a chance to grow unburdened.

Living authentically & aligned with your purpose

When you release what isn’t you, what’s left is your true vision, values, and what you really want to create. That’s powerful.

Improved mental & physical wellbeing

Self-limiting beliefs contribute to chronic stress, low mood, perhaps depression. Letting go reduces those pressures.

How to Start Releasing: Steps & Tools

Here are steps and tools that help:

Step 1: Awareness & Identification

Notice recurring negative self-talk.

Pay attention to times you’re holding back: fear of judgement, fear of failure.

Journal: write down beliefs as they come, track where they might have come from (parents, teachers, culture).

Step 2: Question & Challenge Them

Ask: Is this belief truly mine? Is it fact or story?

Collect evidence against it: things you have done that contradict it.

Step 3: Reframe & Replace

Change “I’m not good enough” → “I am always learning and growing.”

Use affirmations, visualisation.

Step 4: Embodied Practices

Movement, nature, somatic work.

Breath-work: breathing practices are especially useful to release emotional energy stuck in the body.

Breath-Work: Why It’s Powerful & What We’re Seeing

Breath-work isn’t just “take a deep breath” — when practised intentionally, it has big effects. Research shows:

It lowers stress, anxiety, depression in controlled trials. Nature+2

Even short sessions (5-10 minutes) of breath regulation improve mood and physiological markers like heart rate variability (HRV). PMC+1

Deep, deliberate breathing calms the nervous system, helping release stored trauma or beliefs locked into body and mind.

One practice that some people do is a 90-minute breath-work session. In that time, with guided breathing (often continuous or with few pauses), emotional material often comes to the surface, can be processed, released. Many report feeling lighter, clearer, more empowered after such sessions.

What Releasing Looks & Feels Like in Perthshire

Living in or near Perthshire gives unique opportunities:

Nature as healer: hills, lochs, woods give quiet, space for breath-work or reflection.

Community: tight-knit rural or semi-rural communities can both enforce limiting beliefs and support deep change. Sharing openly helps.

Cultural heritage: being Scottish, there can be strong ideas around “stoicism”, “don’t complain”, “get on with it” — useful traits, but sometimes trapping. Releasing limiting beliefs in that context might mean allowing vulnerability, saying “this hurts”, or “I need help”.

Practical Tips & Local Case Study

Here are practical tips, using a (fictional but realistic) case study from Perthshire:

Case Study: Isla from Aberfeldy

Isla grew up hearing “we don’t aim too high”, “you’ll never leave this place” from well-meaning parents. She believed she couldn’t be successful outside local towns.

She began noticing her thought patterns: felt smaller in meetings, avoided applying for promotion.

She joined a breath-work workshop in Perthshire (90 minutes), combining guided breathing, journaling, reflection. Over time, she replaced “I can’t” with “I choose to try”. She now works in a role she once thought impossible and mentors others locally.

Tips you might try (in or near Perthshire):

Book a 90-minute breath-work workshop (in a venue with nature views if possible).

Use morning or evening walks by a loch, forest or hill and incorporate simple breath exercises.

Find groups locally (mindfulness, breath-work, shamanic circles) to share and release together.

Keep a journal of limiting beliefs, track when they arise, challenge them.
