Not because they’re weak. Not because they’re broken. But because they’re human.

Yet when we’re faced with someone in emotional pain, something uncomfortable often happens. We rush in with solutions. We try to fix. We distract. We minimise. We offer advice before we offer presence.

Most of us know that emotions are normal. We say things like “feel your feelings” or “it’s healthy to express emotion”. But when those feelings show up in real time — in another adult — many people don’t know what to do with them.

A child crying is easier. We scoop them up. We soothe. We offer comfort without judgement.
An adult crying, however, can make people uneasy. There’s an unspoken expectation to pull yourself together, to be rational, to cope.

If someone hurts themselves physically, we respond instinctively with care, patience, and compassion. We don’t demand they explain the pain or get over it quickly. We accept that healing takes time.

Emotional pain doesn’t receive the same grace.

For many of us, the blueprint we were shown growing up sounded more like:
“Stop crying.”
“Buck up.”
“Don’t be so sensitive.”

Or we were distracted and cheered up instead of being met where we were. The message was subtle but clear: strong emotions are inconvenient.

So as adults, when we’re confronted with sadness, grief, rage, or despair — either in ourselves or others — we haven’t been taught how to sit with it. We haven’t been shown how to witness pain without trying to control it.

And yet, when someone is in the depths of their pain, solutions are rarely what they need first.

What they need is to be seen.
To be met with compassion, care, and presence.
To feel that their experience makes sense — even if it’s uncomfortable.

Allowing strong emotions to flow doesn’t mean encouraging suffering. It means recognising that emotion moves through us when it’s allowed, but gets stuck when it’s suppressed or hurried away.

There is a place for solutions. There is a time for encouragement, perspective, and forward movement. And yes, there are moments when someone becomes stuck in a loop of misery, where a firmer conversation or a nudge towards responsibility and self-support is needed.

But that moment comes after someone has been witnessed — not before.

Before problem-solving, there must be permission.
Before fixing, there must be feeling.
Before change, there must be acknowledgement.

It really is OK to not feel OK.

Not as a permanent state.
Not as an identity.
But as a natural, human response to life.

Sometimes the most healing thing we can offer isn’t advice, reassurance, or positivity — but the simple act of staying present with someone while they find their own way back to steadier ground.

class="zpheading zpheading-align-center zpheading-align-mobile-center zpheading-align-tablet-center " data-editor="true">Exploring the layers of conditioning that rise to the surface when we slow down and listen.

Shadow work fascinates me, but I’m always struck by how relentless it can feel when you actually meet yourself in those uncomfortable places. We talk about ego, conditioning, personality, but when you begin pulling threads that formed before you even understood language, you realise how deeply embedded these patterns are — and how hard they are to see until one day they surface and you can no longer unsee them.

The strange thing is, the realisation itself isn’t the hard part. Seeing a pattern clearly can almost feel like a moment of relief — a flash of truth. The journey is hard because once you begin this work, that’s it. You can’t unsee what you’ve seen. It’s like taking the red pill: the inner world starts revealing itself, layer by layer, and each layer brings its own emotional charge. These aren’t surface-level insights; they come with depth, history, and feeling. That’s what makes this path so intense — the steady unfolding of everything you’ve carried, everything that has shaped you, rising into awareness one piece at a time.

For me, the most confronting moments come when I realise that something I believed was “just who I am” might not be me at all. It might be something I absorbed so early in life that it became stitched into my identity before I had any awareness or choice in the matter.

We’re not born with these patterns.
We come in as a blank slate — open, receptive, unfiltered.

In those first years, we begin building the operating system we need to survive in the world. Everything around us becomes a code: the emotions in the room, the dynamics between adults, unspoken beliefs, the way our needs are met or not met. And these early experiences form the deepest, most fundamental patterns we carry.

This particular pattern took a long time to surface. I’d had small glimpses of it over the last couple of years, but it’s only in the last six months that it finally revealed itself fully. That’s the thing about this work — our environment is constantly giving us feedback. Our emotional state is shaped by that feedback, and the feedback is shaped by our behaviour, our conditioning, our patterns. It’s all connected.

People often talk about “the red pill” as a kind of awakening, but for me it’s far more subtle. It’s the noticing. It’s the moment you step out of the immersive emotional experience and ask:

What is actually driving this feeling? Where is this coming from?

Most of the time we’re inside the emotion, reacting from it, believing it’s the whole truth. But taking the red pill is that shift — the ability to stand slightly outside yourself and observe the pattern underneath. Some people call it waking up. For me, it’s the recognition that everything — and I mean everything — is programming. Some programming is obvious. Some is deeply hidden. But once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

It’s like finding the one domino that knocks down a whole chain of understanding. Or like sliding the missing piece into a mental Tetris game — suddenly all the layers rearrange themselves, and a part of your inner world finally makes sense.

I’ve also realised something else about this journey: most of us are far too busy to ever notice these hidden patterns. When life is full — caring for family, working, tending to household tasks, keeping up with friends, dealing with the day-to-day — there’s no space for deeper reflection. We stay in motion, and the noise of life drowns out the quieter truths within us.

To see these patterns, you often have to turn the noise down.

You need the kind of stillness that lets your inner world rise to the surface.

For me, that looks like quiet time, swimming in a loch, breathwork, meditation, walking in nature — moments where the mind softens enough for something deeper to be heard.

But here’s the uncomfortable part: sometimes we keep ourselves busy because we’re avoiding the work. The emotional work. The messy work. The work that asks us to meet the parts of ourselves we’d rather not see.

We busy our minds.
We busy our diaries.
We busy ourselves with other people’s problems.
All while quietly avoiding our own.

And yet, this is why the work matters. Because when we finally stop running from ourselves, when we create enough stillness to feel what’s underneath, the patterns begin to reveal their shape — and with that, the possibility of change.

Doing this work isn’t easy.
It’s uncomfortable. It’s confronting. It can be exhausting.

But each time a pattern reveals itself, something softens.

Something opens.
Something lets go.

And on the other side of that release is peace — a deeper, quieter sense of who I actually am beneath all the conditioning.

That’s what keeps me on this path.
Layer by layer, coming home to myself.

Like something inside you is holding you back, even when you want to move forward? That something might be limiting beliefs — thoughts, patterns, inherited expectations that no longer serve you. Releasing those beliefs can open up real transformation in your life.

What Are Limiting Beliefs & Where Do They Come From

Limiting beliefs are negative stories or assumptions we hold about ourselves: “I’m not good enough”, “I don’t deserve success”, “Change is too hard”. They feel real, but often they’re built from:

Upbringing and parents: Messages from childhood (“You mustn’t…”, “That’s not for people like us…”) become internalised.

Generational patterns: Beliefs passed down (e.g. about work ethic, fear of failure, what success looks like) from grandparents to parents to you.

Cultural and community expectations: In small towns or rural Scotland (including Perthshire), traditions and expectations — perhaps “stick with what we know”, “don’t aim too high”, “be modest” — can be both grounding and limiting.

Past experiences & trauma: Events when your effort was discouraged, when failure hurt, or when you were judged. These experiences feed the belief system.

Why Releasing Limiting Beliefs Matters

Letting go of beliefs that no longer serve you is more than just “feeling lighter.” Here are some big reasons why the work is worth it:

More emotional freedom and happiness

When you stop carrying old beliefs, anxiety, fear, self-doubt tend to fade. You can feel more at ease, more joyful.

Greater potential for growth & success

Without internal blocks, you may try things you never believed you could. New possibilities, new paths open up.

Better relationships, including with your children

If you hold limiting beliefs, there’s a strong chance you’ll transmit them to your kids. Releasing them means breaking cycles — giving your children a chance to grow unburdened.

Living authentically & aligned with your purpose

When you release what isn’t you, what’s left is your true vision, values, and what you really want to create. That’s powerful.

Improved mental & physical wellbeing

Self-limiting beliefs contribute to chronic stress, low mood, perhaps depression. Letting go reduces those pressures.

How to Start Releasing: Steps & Tools

Here are steps and tools that help:

Step 1: Awareness & Identification

Notice recurring negative self-talk.

Pay attention to times you’re holding back: fear of judgement, fear of failure.

Journal: write down beliefs as they come, track where they might have come from (parents, teachers, culture).

Step 2: Question & Challenge Them

Ask: Is this belief truly mine? Is it fact or story?

Collect evidence against it: things you have done that contradict it.

Step 3: Reframe & Replace

Change “I’m not good enough” → “I am always learning and growing.”

Use affirmations, visualisation.

Step 4: Embodied Practices

Movement, nature, somatic work.

Breath-work: breathing practices are especially useful to release emotional energy stuck in the body.

Breath-Work: Why It’s Powerful & What We’re Seeing

Breath-work isn’t just “take a deep breath” — when practised intentionally, it has big effects. Research shows:

It lowers stress, anxiety, depression in controlled trials. Nature+2

Even short sessions (5-10 minutes) of breath regulation improve mood and physiological markers like heart rate variability (HRV). PMC+1

Deep, deliberate breathing calms the nervous system, helping release stored trauma or beliefs locked into body and mind.

One practice that some people do is a 90-minute breath-work session. In that time, with guided breathing (often continuous or with few pauses), emotional material often comes to the surface, can be processed, released. Many report feeling lighter, clearer, more empowered after such sessions.

What Releasing Looks & Feels Like in Perthshire

Living in or near Perthshire gives unique opportunities:

Nature as healer: hills, lochs, woods give quiet, space for breath-work or reflection.

Community: tight-knit rural or semi-rural communities can both enforce limiting beliefs and support deep change. Sharing openly helps.

Cultural heritage: being Scottish, there can be strong ideas around “stoicism”, “don’t complain”, “get on with it” — useful traits, but sometimes trapping. Releasing limiting beliefs in that context might mean allowing vulnerability, saying “this hurts”, or “I need help”.

Practical Tips & Local Case Study

Here are practical tips, using a (fictional but realistic) case study from Perthshire:

Case Study: Isla from Aberfeldy

Isla grew up hearing “we don’t aim too high”, “you’ll never leave this place” from well-meaning parents. She believed she couldn’t be successful outside local towns.

She began noticing her thought patterns: felt smaller in meetings, avoided applying for promotion.

She joined a breath-work workshop in Perthshire (90 minutes), combining guided breathing, journaling, reflection. Over time, she replaced “I can’t” with “I choose to try”. She now works in a role she once thought impossible and mentors others locally.

Tips you might try (in or near Perthshire):

Book a 90-minute breath-work workshop (in a venue with nature views if possible).

Use morning or evening walks by a loch, forest or hill and incorporate simple breath exercises.

Find groups locally (mindfulness, breath-work, shamanic circles) to share and release together.

Keep a journal of limiting beliefs, track when they arise, challenge them.

And what if we are now standing at the end of one cycle and the beginning of another?

This article explores: ✅ The evidence for lost civilisations that challenge mainstream history ✅ The ancient cycles of time and their connection to the present shift ✅ What these cycles teach us about our future

The past is resurfacing, and with it, the knowledge we need to navigate this transformation.

1. The Forgotten Past: Lost Civilisations & Advanced Knowledge

From the ruins of Göbekli Tepe to the mysteries of the Sphinx, from sunken cities off the coasts of India to out-of-place artefacts that predate recorded history, evidence is mounting that human civilisation is far older than we’ve been led to believe.

Historians tell us that Göbekli Tepe, discovered in modern-day Turkey, is over 12,000 years old—yet it was built with advanced knowledge, seemingly overnight, and then deliberately buried. Why? Who built it? And what does this mean for our understanding of history?

Researchers like Graham Hancock, Randall Carlson, and Gregg Braden propose that we are not the first advanced civilisation—just the latest in a long cycle.

Ancient myths across cultures tell similar stories:

The Great Flood—spoken of in Sumerian, biblical, and indigenous traditions—suggests that past civilisations were wiped out.

The Golden Age—described by the Greeks, Hindus, and Mayans—hints at earlier advanced societies.

Stories of Giants, Gods, and Beings of Light—found in every major civilisation—suggest that we may not have been alone in our development.

If our history is cyclical rather than linear, then the rise and fall of civilisations is a pattern—not an anomaly.

2. The Cycles of Time: Ancient Clues to Our Current Transition

Ancient cultures measured time differently than we do today. The Mayan Long Count Calendar, the Hindu Yuga Cycles, and the Great Year cycle all suggest that humanity moves through repeating ages of enlightenment and darkness.

Gregg Braden and other researchers propose that these cycles are linked to cosmic movements—Earth’s position relative to the galaxy affects consciousness, civilisation, and planetary conditions.

Key Cycles That Indicate We Are in a Period of Change:

✅ The Yuga Cycles (Hindu Cosmology) – We are transitioning from the Kali Yuga (darkness and ignorance) into a new age of awakening.

✅ The Great Year (Precession of the Equinoxes) – A 25,920-year cycle influencing human evolution and global change.

✅ Mayan Prophecies – The 2012 “end” was not a doomsday event, but a marker of a new era.

These cycles suggest that we are now entering another great shift—a moment where we choose how the next civilisation will emerge.

3. The Lessons of the Past: What Lost Civilisations Teach Us About the Future

If we are at the turning point of a great cycle, what does history teach us about how to navigate it?

The evidence suggests that previous civilisations faced similar choices:

1️⃣ They either aligned with natural cycles and thrived, or they ignored them and collapsed.

2️⃣ They developed advanced technology, but how they used it determined their fate.

3️⃣ Their wisdom was preserved in myths, sacred texts, and stone—but only those who sought it could rediscover it.

What We Can Do Now:

✅ Recognise the shift – Understanding the cycle helps us navigate it rather than resist it.

✅ Seek out ancient knowledge – Hidden texts, indigenous teachings, and forgotten wisdom hold keys to thriving in this transition.

✅ Align with the natural world – Past civilisations that lived in harmony with nature lasted longer; modern technology must integrate with, not dominate, the Earth.

✅ Develop consciousness & awareness – The real transformation is not external—it is within.

We are at a crossroads. The rise and fall of civilisations is part of the natural rhythm of existence. The question is: How will we choose to shape this next cycle?

Final Reflection:

If history is cyclical, then we are not just witnesses to change—we are participants in shaping what comes next.

What do you feel when you hear about lost civilisations and the cycles of time? Do you sense that we are in a moment of transition? How do you see yourself contributing to the unfolding shift?

Let’s explore this together. 🚀
